HARRIET SHORTALL

MUSIC TUTOR & EDUCATOR

I am a recent Masters graduate from Canterbury Christ Church University, and my current work focuses on the impact of music upon the community; including social inclusion, and the health and wellbeing benefits of active participation in musical activities. I work in a variety of settings, including as an instrumental tutor, and running music workshops for at-risk youth and families with younger children.

I am currently working with primary schools in Folkestone delivering instrument making workshops and am looking to implement these into other formats for charities such as Kent Refugee Action Network (KRAN).

INSTRUMENTAL TUITION

I teach clarinet, theory, flute and ukulele privately to a variety of students. I have a number of students at The Folkestone School for Girls, some private students and have previously worked with children with Special Educational Needs.

I also have experience in conducting and leading small and large ensembles.

I am available for instrumental and theory tuition, and GCSE music tutoring, either within schools, or privately. Please contact me directly for more information regarding lessons.

WORKSHOPS

As part of my undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Canterbury Christ Church University, I was involved in  music workshops, focussing on the effects of music on the health and wellbeing of all participants.

Most recently, as a Masters student, my work focused on the rehabilitative properties of music for those in prisons. It was here I was involved in vocal workshops combined with guided imagery with music (GIM) style therapy. Here I worked with Kerry Boyle in Christmas workshops and then led prisoners in some a capella performances for International Women's Day.

As an undergraduate, I have worked with children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and both healthy and vulnerable older adults (including those with dementia and terminal illnesses). Working with SEN children, I delivered musical workshops related to the current educational topics of the school. Working with older adults, I ran vocal and instrumental workshops at the Canterbury branch of Age UK, and in dementia care homes. I also helped in demonstrating the importance of music for the terminally ill, which led to the implementation of a regular music programme in the Canterbury branch of Pilgrim's Hospice. Evidence of this can be accessed on the CCCU website: https://www.canterbury.ac.uk/news-centre/press-releases/2016/students-hold-music-sessions-with-terminally-ill-adults-for-wellbeing.aspx
